Did you know that it’s because something happened in Rochester, New York, that we have the calculator, the cereal, the marshmallows, and the Graham crackers? Additionally, this is where the first thermometer, the first voting machine, the first gold tooth, Capitan America, the idea of the automobile, and the first dental chair all came from. We must agree that there’s something special about Rochester!
Located in Upstate New York between Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes region, it’s a city filled with opportunities. It has the characteristics of a much larger city but the spirit of a small town. Rochester is a place with a rich history. It stands out for its diversity, education, nightlife, and recreation. Its friendliness, accessibility, affordability, sense of community, and great quality of life make it a great place to live.
Rochester is known by many names. For its people, it could be “America’s Biggest Small Town” because of its urban-suburban and small-town mix feel. It’s also known as the “Young Lion of the West” or “Flour City,” due to the explosive early success of the town and the numerous flour mills that bloomed in the early 19th century. For others, it’s also called “Flower City,” as the local industry moved towards the plant nursery business.
The several ways to call the city correspond to the multiple aspects in which it thrives. There is a vibrant culture and distinguished history in the fields of photography, xerography, and optics. Additionally, it excels in manufacturing and research, and it has an impressive educational system. Rochester also has the least expensive real estate market out of all major New York cities, with a median housing price of only $83,000.
Rochester has the highest deaf population per capita in the nation, largely because it’s home to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. In short, Rochester has it all. It’s easy to get to. Not overcrowded, and not so expensive. It’s home to big-time thinkers, like Susan B. Anthony, a leader of the women’s suffrage movement, and the famous abolitionist and reformer Frederick Douglass.
For anyone who likes to eat, Rochester is a foodie paradise. There are festivals every week in the Finger Lakes Wine Region, and a waterfall in the middle of the city too! - Highland Park: A gorgeous 150-acre park, Highland Park is home to a variety of entertaining activities, events, and fascinating attractions.
